Promoting Balanced Catholic Fidelity

“An apostate from the faith, a heretic, or a schismatic incurs a latae sententiae excommunication.” (Canon 1364 §1)

The Society of St. Pius X has proceeded with episcopal consecrations despite the explicit appeal and prohibition of the Roman Pontiff. This is not a mere disciplinary disagreement but a grave act against the unity of the Church.

The Code of Canon Law defines schism as “the refusal of submission to the Supreme Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him” (Canon 751). Unity with the Pope is not optional; it is a constitutive element of the Catholic Church.

A latae sententiae excommunication is an automatic excommunication. It is incurred by the very commission of the offense, without the need for a formal declaration, provided the conditions required by canon law are met. A declaration by Church authority may later confirm that the penalty has been incurred, but the penalty itself does not depend on that declaration.

The illicit consecration of bishops against the will of the Roman Pontiff has historically been regarded by the Church as an act that can give rise to schism and its canonical consequences. The Church alone has the authority to determine and declare how the law applies in particular cases.

Holy See Declares SSPX Bishops Excommunicated; Faithful Urged to Avoid the Society

July 2, 2026 – The Holy See has officially declared that the bishops involved in the Society of St. Pius X’s (SSPX) illicit episcopal consecrations on July 1, 2026, have incurred latae sententiae (automatic) excommunication for committing a schismatic act against the unity of the Catholic Church.

According to the Vatican, the consecrations were carried out without the required papal mandate despite repeated appeals from Pope Leo XIV to refrain from proceeding. By rejecting the Pope’s authority in this grave matter, those involved incurred the canonical penalty established by the Church.

The decree also states that the excommunicated bishops are forbidden from exercising ecclesiastical ministry or celebrating the sacraments until they are reconciled with the Church.

For the faithful, the Holy See’s decision serves as a clear warning. Catholics should not support, promote, or knowingly associate themselves with the SSPX’s schismatic actions. Fidelity to Catholic Tradition includes fidelity to the Roman Pontiff, whom Christ entrusted with preserving the unity of His Church.

The Holy See’s decree marks a decisive moment, calling all Catholics to remain in full communion with Pope Leo XIV and to avoid movements that separate themselves from the authority established by Christ.

For this reason, Catholics should avoid involvement with the Society of St. Pius X and should be cautious of those who publicly justify, promote, or encourage acts that undermine communion with the Holy Father. No attachment to the Traditional Latin Mass, however sincere, can justify separation from the visible unity of the Church.

What Should Catholics Do?

  1. Remain faithful to the Pope. Pray for the Holy Father daily and remain united with him. Personal disagreements never justify rejecting the authority Christ entrusted to the Successor of St. Peter.
  2. Receive the sacraments in full communion with the Church. Attend Mass and receive the sacraments in parishes and communities fully united with the Pope and your diocesan bishop, not in communities separated from ecclesial communion.
  3. Deepen your knowledge of the Catholic faith. Read the Catechism, Canon Law, and official Church documents. A well-formed conscience is less likely to be deceived by misleading arguments or selective interpretations.
  4. Avoid SSPX chapels and activities. Regular participation can gradually normalize disobedience to the Pope and weaken your understanding of the Church’s unity and legitimate authority.
  5. Do not financially support the SSPX. Avoid donations, fundraising, or purchasing materials that directly sustain the Society’s mission or help promote its apostolate.
  6. Be discerning about Catholic media. Not every Catholic-looking website, podcast, or YouTube channel faithfully represents the Church. Avoid content that constantly attacks the Pope or promotes division.
  7. Support faithful Traditional Latin Mass communities. If you love the Traditional Latin Mass, support priests and communities that preserve the Church’s liturgical tradition while remaining obedient to legitimate ecclesiastical authority.
  8. Verify claims with official Church teaching. Before accepting criticisms of the Church or Vatican II, read official documents and trustworthy Catholic sources instead of relying solely on SSPX publications.
  9. Avoid promoting schismatic content. Do not share posts, videos, or articles that defend schismatic acts or encourage resistance to the Pope, even if they contain otherwise good Catholic material.
  10. Pray and make sacrifices for reconciliation. Offer Rosaries, Holy Masses, fasting, and other sacrifices for the bishops, clergy, and faithful of the SSPX, asking God to restore full communion with the Church.
  11. Unsubscribe from pro-SSPX influencers. Stop following influencers who promote or sympathize with the SSPX or encourage distrust of the Pope. Follow faithful Catholic voices that strengthen unity with the Church and her Magisterium.

Guard your faith. Just as we avoid influences that could lead us into doctrinal or moral error, we should also avoid influences that normalize disobedience and schism. The devil often begins by sowing doubt about legitimate authority before leading people into separation.

Our duty is not only to preserve the beauty of Catholic Tradition but also to preserve the unity of the Church. True Tradition is inseparable from communion with the Successor of St. Peter.

    AMEN!

How do you comply with number seven. That statement is an oxymoron. You can’t be faithful to the Latin mass and be aligned with Pope Leo.

      They arent mutually exclusive.
What qualifies as an oxymoron is claiming to defend Catholic Tradition while rejecting the authority of the Pope.

” or encourage distrust of the Pope”
For myself, however, I don’t need for an SSPX to even exist to potentially come to this frame of mind. .

Either Christ put Peter and his successors in charge of the Church, or He did not. If He did, then defiance and distrust of the Pope is merely a mask for defiance and distrust of Christ.
