Maumere, Indonesia (November 12, 2025) — Police in Maumere, Flores Island, are investigating an act of vandalism that occurred at the Chapel of the Beato Dionisius Monastery.
The incident, which took place early Wednesday morning around 02:00 Central Indonesian Time, involved the displacement of several sacred statues and damage to a musical organ used for liturgical celebrations.
According to the Police, officers have begun a full investigation to determine the perpetrator and motive. Initial reports confirm that several religious objects were found out of place, and the chapel’s organ sustained damage.

Church and Police Appeal for Calm
Rev. Fr. Yakobus Donisius Migo, Secretary of the Diocese of Maumere, urged the Catholic faithful to remain calm and trust the ongoing investigation: “We ask everyone to stay peaceful and patient as the authorities continue their work,” Fr. Migo said. “Let us respond with prayer, not anger.”
Community Reaction
The vandalism news quickly spread on social media, drawing mixed emotions of sadness and anger from the Catholic communities online.
Many faithful called for stronger security in churches and chapels: “All houses of worship should be locked and, if possible, guarded,” one comment read.
“This case must be handled thoroughly so that the perpetrator receives proper justice,” another added.
While some speculated that the act may have been done by an individual with mental illness, others questioned whether it was a deliberate attack.
Netizens on Facebook emphasized the need for swift police action to prevent further desecrations and to preserve peace in the region.
Flores: A Catholic Heartland in a Muslim-Majority Nation
Flores Island, where Maumere is located, stands as a Catholic stronghold in predominantly Muslim Indonesia.
The island’s Catholic roots trace back to Portuguese missionaries who arrived in the 16th century, bringing with them the Gospel, education, and cultural influences that endure today.
The island’s name, Flores — meaning “flowers” in Portuguese — symbolizes both its natural beauty and its vibrant faith life.
Over time, Catholicism became deeply integrated into the people’s identity. Today, over 90% of residents in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), which includes Flores, identify as Catholic — making it one of the most Catholic regions in Southeast Asia.
Maumere itself is home to seminaries, religious communities, and Catholic institutions that continue to form priests and missionaries serving both in Indonesia and abroad. The faith here remains strong despite challenges, making the recent act of vandalism all the more painful to local believers.
Ongoing Investigation
As of this writing, police have not confirmed any suspects.
Investigators continue to gather evidence and statements from witnesses. Church leaders have urged the faithful to continue praying for peace, for the protection of all places of worship, and for truth and justice to prevail.
